Many people think that travelling from the United Kingdom to New York City would be expensive. Can you blame them? It sounds expensive. When most people think of the United Kingdom, London is the first city that pops into their heads. Combine that with New York City and you have visions of glamorous dining, upscale shopping, amazing museums, some of the most entertaining shows in the world, and an overall atmosphere of class. But what most people don’t realize is the type of city you’re flying to or from doesn’t determine that cost of a flight. If anything, it’s the opposite. For instance, New York City is so large and has so many travellers that almost every airline flies there. This means the airlines will make more money. This, in turn, is a benefit to the traveller. Since there is so much business, there will always be cheap flights to New York. A smaller city like Charlotte, North Carolina, doesn’t get nearly as much traffic. Therefore, flights into and out of Charlotte will almost always be more expensive.
The good news is that flights from the UK to NY can be found for cheap. One of my favourite places in the world is a little town located on the south coast of the island of Crete. The town of Matala (pronounced Matt-ala) was an ancient port which developed into a fishing village and then became a popular destination for hippies in the 60s. Matala is known for its cliffside caves that overlook the main town beach. These caves were built by the Romans and have been used as prehistoric dwellings, places of worship, tombs, and shelter for the throngs of hippies that flocked to the area in the 1960s. They are now protected by the Archaeological Service so don’t expect to spend the night in one of them. Another popular attraction in the area is Red Beach. This beach is the place to go for those of you who are a bit more adventurous as it is the local clothing-optional beach. It is a 30 minute walk from town on a relatively steep trail so make sure you are comfortable taking a moderately strenuous hike.
Matala can be very crowded in the summer and accommodations can be scarce. Late spring and early autumn are the best times to visit. If you plan on heading to Matala at the height of the tourist season, it is advisable to plan ahead and book through a site like dealchecker. There are plenty of tavernas, bars, and places to eat. Most restaurants are reasonably priced and you can expect a good dinner for 15-20 Euros.
